Endodontics (CANAL)

Endodontic treatment, commonly known as root canal treatment, is a dental procedure designed to treat infections or damage to the inner part of the tooth, known as the dental pulp. The pulp, composed of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, is located inside the tooth, in the pulp chamber and root canals.

Here is a summary of the typical steps in endodontic treatment:

  1. Diagnosis and Evaluation: The dentist performs a clinical examination and may take X-rays to assess the condition of the pulp and identify the extent of the infection or damage.

  2. Anesthesia: To ensure the procedure is comfortable, the dentist applies local anesthesia to the area around the affected tooth.

  3. Pulp Access: The dentist makes an opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.

  4. Removal of Damaged Pulp: Infected or damaged pulp is removed from the root canals using specialized instruments.

  5. Cleaning and Disinfection: The root canals are cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria and debris.

  6. Canal Filling: After cleaning, the canals are filled with a specific material, usually gutta-percha, to seal the space and prevent future infections.

  7. Tooth Restoration: The treated tooth usually needs a restoration, such as a crown, to restore its form and function.

Endodontic treatment is effective in saving teeth that might otherwise require extraction. The main indication for this treatment is the presence of an infection in the pulp, usually caused by deep cavities, fractures, or trauma to the tooth.

After treatment, it's normal for the tooth to experience some temporary discomfort, but symptoms should improve as the area heals. If performed correctly, endodontic treatment can help preserve the tooth for many years.
